Mountain Training 'Hill and Mountain Skills' Courses..........


These courses are a practical introduction to the key skills required to get started in hill walking and mountain walking. They are personal skills courses and so there is no assessment.  There may be some indoor sessions, but wherever possible we will be working outside or 'learning by doing' ie whilst on a journey!


So which course is for you?

The aim is to give you the key skills and knowledge to safely plan, navigate and look after yourself on your own walks in the hills or mountains. If you are completely new to hill walking, or have some, but limited experience and perhaps lack the confidence to get started yourselves – then we would recommend a tailor made HILL SKILLS COURSE.  A MOUNTAIN SKILLS COURSE will be structured around your existing hill walking skills but is intended to support your progression into more mountainous countryside. As well as introduce you to more advanced skills and build your confidence, the course will give you all the elements you need to prepare, plan and undertake your own adventurous and challenging 'mountain days'!


A 'Mountain Skills course would also be an ideal progression opportunity for those that have attended a Hill Skills course at some earlier point.

Hill Skills Course


Example Location: Cheviot Hills or Mungrisdale.


Course content: How to plan walks, become familiar with the use of a map and learn about the equipment required. You will also gain an understanding of the effects of weather, how to deal with emergencies and gain a valuable insight into the upland environment.


Terrain areas: Countryside and moorland where the skills will be transferable to many popular UK walking areas.


Duration: 2 days


Experience: None required.

Mountain Skills Course


Location: Our courses are usually delivered in the Lake District or Scotland


Course content: Skills in map and compass, mountain weather forecasting, movement through steep ground, planning and preparation, emergency procedures, seasonal effects and the mountain environment.


Terrain areas: UK high mountain areas.


Duration: 2 days.


Experience/Fitness: Some experience of summer hill-walking would be beneficial. A reasonable level of fitness will also be required.
